In Swahili and the wider Bantu family, kazi means work — purposeful, productive endeavour. In Nguni languages the augmentative -kazi signals greatness and stature. Together, Kazi Edu reads as “great work”: learning as active mastery, not passive consumption.
Ubuntu holds that a person is a person through other people. When one child masters Grade 1 literacy or passes Matric, the whole family and community rise with them. Kazi Edu treats each learner’s progress as collective progress — and puts human relationships, not machines, at the centre.

Data cost is the single biggest barrier between a South African child and a quality online education. Kazi Edu is designed from the ground up to remove it.
What zero-rating means
Under ICASA’s regulations, mobile networks carry the data cost for approved public-benefit educational services. Learners reach the portal without spending a rand of airtime or a megabyte of their own bundle.

Registered public-benefit organisations serving education. Kazi Edu is run as a non-profit, no-financial-gain project — exactly the profile the zero-rating framework is built to support.
The timeline
Operators face an ICASA deadline of 15 January 2027 to enable zero-rated access for qualifying educational platforms. Kazi Edu is building toward that window.
To keep zero-rating intact, the platform is engineered to be fully first-party and low-bandwidth — no third-party trackers, ad networks or external CDNs that would pull a learner’s session off the zero-rated route. Low-bandwidth channels such as WhatsApp keep the reach as wide as possible.
Serving CAPS content and running AI tutoring at national scale needs real, sovereign infrastructure — locally hosted in South Africa to keep latency low, data on-shore, and the zero-rating route clean. This is the build Codexa is committing to provide.
